Learning how to stretch your own canvas can ensure control over cost, size, and quality, plus it’s just nice to add another layer of connection with your artwork and another skill under your belt. The head of our woodshop, Zach Storm, is instructing this class meaning you’ll have the opportunity to pick his brain about more than just stretching canvas and you can delve into other curiosities tying into substrates and the pros and cons of each one.
You'll start out with a set of wood strainers and a patch of canvas. Zach will then walk you through properly measuring and cutting the canvas to fit your bars. He’ll teach you how to stretch the canvas for optimal tightness, how to tack the corners to ensure they’re clean, how to throw a couple of staples here and there, and ta-da! You’ll have your first self-stretched canvas to take home.
Afterwards, Zach will give a short highly informative lecture covering the different types of substrates available in the art material world. Specifically he'll cover the benefits and disadvantages of working with wood faced panels, aluminum faced panels, stretched canvas and linen on wood bars and aluminum bars depending on your specific project. He'll also cover basic best practices techniques, like how to tighten your canvas by adjusting the keys.
Outside of teaching you how to build your own substrate, this class seeks to educate you on how to make the best decision material-wise for your projects big or small!
Next workshop dates are March 21st and May 23rd.
