Watercolor Workshop with Pablo Ruben

This two day workshop will teach you a range of different watercolor techniques with a focus on painting an urban landscape and depicting water. Students will learn to paint two different sorts of water reflections and the basic knowledge behind plein air watercolor painting through a handful of exercises amounting to 12 hours split up between the two days. Each exercise will be completely explained by the teacher during the demonstration and then the students will repeat the same subject with the personal tuition and supervision of Pablo Ruben. Ruben is fluent in English, French and Spanish, if necessary. The curriculum is as follows:

Introduction:
- Presentation and explanation of all the materials and their uses: easel, paints/pigments, paper, and brushes.
- You'll learn how to load your brush with pigments, different water and paper exposure techniques, and how to use them to your advantage depending on the effect you're looking for.
- You'll practice creating combinations between brush loads and paper states.
First exercise: You'll practice a big wash with a degraded landscape with calm water, puddles or lakes.
Second exercise: Landscape with water in movement to learn to make waves.
Third exercise: Urban or house reflections. You'll also learn drawing tips regarding how to simplify recreating architecture and, thereafter, how to create their reflections.
Lastly, depending on the amount of time left at the end of the second day, the instructor will present a final demonstration and critique everyone's work!

This workshop is taking place on the weekend of September 21st and 22nd from 10AM-5PM with a one hour lunch break on each day. You must bring your own materials but you'll receive a 10% student discount on any supplies you need to pick up.

About Pablo Ruben: Pablo has been painting with watercolors since he was a child and has won over 300 awards for his paintings. He is also the President of the International Watercolor Society of Spain and he has participated in many of the most important watercolor Biennials all around the World: China, Korea, Thailand, India, Mexico, Canada, Belgium and Italy! He currently teaches drawing and watercolor classes at ABC Museum of Drawing and Illustration in Madrid, Spain.

Materials list:

Paper
2 full 22x30" sheets of 100% cotton paper, 140lb, with a cold press surface. Preferably by Arches or Saundars-Waterford.

Brushes
- 1 medium-sized Petit Gris brush, the instructor uses an Escoda Ultimo brush #12.
- 1 medium-sized pointed synthetic brush, the instructor uses an Escoda Perla #14.
- 1 hake brush, the instructor uses an Escoda Ultimo flat #14.
- 1 rigger brush, the instructor uses an Escoda Versatil #6.

Paint
The paints for the class are preferred to be in a tube format. The essentials are: Lavender, Ultramarine Blue, Indigo, Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Teal Blue, Sepia, Pyrrol Orange, Opera Pink, Transparent Red Oxide, Buff Titanium, Hansa Yellow Deep, Titanium White and Mars Yellow.
Every similar color to these ones is welcome.

Additional materials: Watercolor palette (the instructor prefers metal over plastic), tape, 18x24" board to fix the paper on, spray bottle, little water container, pencil, and a ruler.
